Significant Rails Performance Improvements On The Way

It's worth noting, however, that the performance increases revolve around removing blocking operations (e.g. database queries that lock up a single Rails process for long periods of time) rather than truly increasing the "performance" of Rails at the base level...

Read the complete blog post here

Why Twitter is winning

In spite of almost 5 months of unavailability of its most viral service, Twitter remains the platform of choice for most users. FriendFeed remains a hybrid of conversations and semi-realtime aggregator, capturing most of the energy of Google Reader as a citation engine but stubbornly refusing to allow its metadata to flow back into Twitter and other real time engines. Facebook has freshened up its UI and allowed us to personalize the news stream to vaguely emulate Twitter. And Jaiku appears to have made the leap to App Engine and could resurface momentarily, only to remind us why Twitter won that one in the first place. Jaiku was always the erector set that could do anything, but who has the time to do anything these days? Better to do what we can do, and let the winners expand their offerings. Supporters of the open source Laconica project and its flagship Identi.ca see the platform as a challenger to Twitte...

Read the complete blog post here

Google Chrome: Is Google planning to release a web browser?

Personally I've never placed much stock in them, because it's always made more sense to tme that Google would continue releasing plugins for existing browsers like Firefox and Internet Explorer to allow users to take advantage of Google's web services. After all, that's what the company has done with the Google Toolbar, Google Gears, and the now-defunct Google Browser Sync. But Philipp Lenssen at Google Blogoscoped has posted a comic book which he says comes straight from Google which seems to indicate that the search engine giant will indeed release a browser soon. Reportedly called Google Chrome, the browser will be based on the open source Webkit rendering engine. So what would Google Chrome have that you can't find in other web browsers? Includes a brand new JavaScript virtual machine called V8 Tabs wil go above the window, not belo...

Read the complete blog post here

Prototype A has been built. It’s in a temporary aluminum case that a local sheet metal shop put together for us that’s at least twice as thick as it needs to be, but the hardware has been defined and is nearing lockdown. We booted the machine in the case for the first time today, accessed the Wifi network and were able to navigate a web page via the touch screen. Most of the work is transitioning to software and ...

Read the complete blog post here
