App Store make Remote connection with iTunes

Now that App Store is out as part of iTunes 7.7 release, we are getting to see all the good things. Here is a quick survey of first impressions: John Falcone at CNet says - It's an easy must-have for any iPhone or iPod Touch owner who enjoys listening to music at home Dan Moren figured out multiple library support. PowerTunes does similar job but doesn't come with the App Store magic (soon?). There is, however, support for multiple libraries. When you start up Remote after associating with a library, it'll take a second to reconnect, during which time you can change which library you want to use (you can also tap the Settings button in the top left corner of any list screen). That'll give you the option to add multiple libraries...

Read the complete blog post here

That seems to to be the case with iTunes. There is a growing outcry against iTunes for it's poor stability, lack of focus and general drift from it's music market origin. Managing huge collection of music files in iTunes is anything but fun. It sucks and can cause lot of frustration when you are in the mood for good music.
Apple App Store Will Challenge iTunes Marketplace? Yes It Can.

They are rolling out products faster than any other company out there. One fall out of that speed is the confusion between product lines. Now that 3G iPhone release is just on the horizon, expectation is that this will bring clarity on how Apple will map out integration strategy between App store and iTunes. App Store will be accessible as part of the iPhone 2.0 software. Thousands of developers have downloaded iPhone SDK and approved applications will be listed on App store gallery. Looking at this description, Apple is planning to allow listing of applications in iTunes catalog. Very much on the lines of existing movies and songs directory. This will draw more users into iPhone marketing. For those not having iPhones, they will be able to view this catalog. Developers will love this feature as this will allow them another market...

Read the complete blog post here

But on Wednesday it delivered a pretty broad hint: a midnight July 7 deadline for developers to submit their finished apps for the store’s grand opening.

“Have your application be among the first available when the App Store goes live,” the message read. “We will continue to accept applications after this time, however your application may not be available until after the launch of the App Store.”

The message was not lost on developers. From Oracle to VisiCalc, the winning application on any software platform tends to be the one that gets there first — although as VisiCalc proved when it was overtaken first by Lotus 1-2-3 and then by Microsoft Excel, any app can be displaced when a new platform comes along.

According to Apple (AAPL), 25,000 people applied to be part of its iPhone developers program, of which 4,000 were admitted. These include some of the biggest names in software publishing — Sega and Electronic Arts (ERTS), for example — and representatives from approximately 175 Fortune 500 companies, as well as hundreds of one-man shops. But even the biggest boys can use the free publicity that will attend prominent positioning on the App Store shelves on opening day.

With so many apps to choose among, picking winners will not be easy. Apple has the best perspective; it showcased 16 apps at the March SDK event and the June Worldwide Developers Conference (see the keynote here), and by next week it will have seen and signed off on hundreds more.

Meanwhile, pitches from publishers inviting software reviews have started to pour in over the transom. Businessweek last Friday posted a slide show featuring a dozen programs under development (see here). Other journalists have used their blogs to troll for promising apps. The coyest was posted by The New York Times’ David Pogue, author of “iPhone - The Missing Manual,” who may or may not already have an iPhone 3G in hand for review (if he did, he couldn’t say). On Tuesday, he bemoaned the fact that even “Big Chief Newspaper Reviewers” didn’t know what apps were coming down the pike and invited developers to give him sneak peaks (see here). He may have regretted opening the floodgates. By 1:35 that afternoon, his post had been updated and the invitation withdrawn.

Rhapsody, Real Networks and Viacom joint venture, launched ambitious program which will allow users to download MP3 file onto their iPods. This is a 180 degree shift in Rhapsody strategy in addressing Apple's dominance in music business. Rhapsody may be finally getting it's acts together. To their credit, getting to be the music store back-end to MTV's music Web sites and iLike, one of the most widely used music applications on social networking site Facebook, is a huge deal. iTunes has done little to reach out to social networking based music consumption. This could be smart move for Rhapsody. iTunes command whopping 70% of the digital music market. Amazon, Walmart, Napster and many other online intiatives are eyeing that market. Industry analysts have come to an agreement that DRM is dead. Music business models have to go beyond restriction based models and embrace creative bundling to protect margins.
